Sembra forse strano parlare di flotta per un lago, ma il Lago Maggiore è davvero molto grande: un perimetro di 165 chilometri, una distesa di 220 chilometri quadrati, 30 paesi disseminati sulla costa e questo determina, certo, sia un grande movimento di persone che vivono in questi paesi sia un importante spostamento di turisti.
Il primo servizio di navigazione su questo lago risale al 1823: era denominato “San Carlo” e consisteva in un piroscafo a ruote mosse da 10 “poveri” cavalli aggiogati a un argano in coperta, per fortuna questo tipo di sfruttamento durò solo pochi anni, infatti, nel 1926 arrivò un battello a vapore chiamato “Verbano”.
